Common Concerns Counselling Can Help With

Many people assume counselling is only for those who are "unwell." In reality, many everyday struggles, such as relationships, emotions, work and life transitions, are exactly what counselling is for. This section introduces these common concerns one by one, so you know you are not alone and how counselling can help.

Relationships and Family

How couples, families and parents and children relate, communicate and set boundaries.

Emotions and Mental Health

Emotional states that keep weighing on you, and the lasting effects of past experiences.

Self and Life Stages

How you see yourself, where your life is heading, and the changes each stage brings.

Work

Stress and burnout from work, and decisions about your career path.

Illness and End of Life

The emotions and preparation facing patients and families in serious illness and at the end of life.

How does counselling help?

Counselling does not hand you answers, and it is not about "fixing" you. Your counsellor works with you to understand how a concern took shape and what keeps it going, then, at your pace, finds ways of responding that fit your life.

Different counsellors draw on different approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, family therapy or person-centred counselling. We will introduce these one by one in our upcoming section on counselling approaches.
